For several years now, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra has been fostering closer ties between symphonic music and the musical cultures of Canada’s indigenous peoples – the First Nations, the Inuit and the Métis – through bold collaborative projects.

One such project is Chaakapesh (2019), a film by Roger Frappier and Justin Kingsley. This documentary follows Kent Nagano, then music director, and the musicians of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra on a tour of northern Quebec. They meet with the Cree, Innu and Inuit communities to share with them a chamber opera based on a Tomson Highway story.
