February 13, 2024 – Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco – Embassy of Canada in Mexico
Today saw the successful conclusion of the Major Case Management Workshop organized by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, in which various security and justice institutions from Puerto Vallarta and Bahia de Banderas participated.
The workshop was inaugurated by Canada’s Ambassador designated to Mexico and is part of Canada’s commitment to collaborate with Mexico on security and rule of law issues. Over the course of three days, Canadian and Mexican participants shared experiences and best practices to strengthen the forensic capacity of Mexican security and justice institutions.
The workshop was led by two forensic experts from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Alberta, Canada: Judith Boisvert and Ferrah Yeager, both of whom have extensive experience in homicide and disappearance cases; as well as the Mexican expert Claudia Lara Medellín, from the State Prosecutor’s Office of Mexico.
The three experts presented case studies to the 29 attendees, which included the Secretary of the Navy, the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Jalisco, the Municipal Police of Puerto Vallarta and the Municipal Police of Bahía de Banderas.
In matters of security and rule of law, our countries exchange information of mutual interest and coordinate joint operations to combat crime.
This is the third workshop that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has held in the country, with the support of the Canadian Embassy in Mexico, and is a response to the request of various Mexican authorities to collaborate in forensic matters. In 2022 and 2023, Canada took this workshop to San Luis Potosí and Quintana Roo, respectively.
Cooperation between Mexico and Canada is based on the Canada-Mexico Action Plan, which was agreed in January 2023 between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Quote
“We hope that the collaboration and partnership between our countries in the areas of homicides, missing persons and serious crimes will help Mexican institutions with their investigations to prosecute cases and offer justice to the families affected. Having three female experts leading the workshop is a sign of the progress of women in the field of policing and in the areas of serious crime investigation in Canada and Mexico.”
